What Is a Bearded Dragon? 

The bearded dragon scientifically known as  Pogona vitticeps belonging to Chordate phylum,is a medium-sized reptile which is easily tameable and is a native to Australia. How to keep a Bearded dragon at home? 

Bearded dragons are better kept inside glass enclosures or aquariums, the enclosure should include basking platforms like a few rocks or pebbles, twigs or climbing branches. A layer of a reptile carpet, a tile or a paper towel is recommended to put inside the enclosure. Above all the most important thing is to keep  a UVB light inside the enclosure along with a tiny rock grotto for the dragon to bask and hide under respectively. All of these are crucial to help the dragon to thermoregulate and stay healthy with a desert-like feel.  

How to handle a Bearded dragon? 

While handling them be gentle, initially help their bodies with a full support when you lay them on your hands, this helps building trust. They need a minimum of 2 weeks to acclimate and this will not stress them out.  

What to feed a Bearded dragon? 

Now coming to their diets, naturally these little creatures are omnivores and they eat insects and veggies. Ideal to feed them with is live mealworms, crickets and small roaches. In veg you can feed them leafy greens, squash, peas and collard greens, but limit fruits and avoid citrus fruits and avocado as much as you can. Also don’t forget to give them fresh and clean water everyday. Bearded dragons are regular eaters so don’t forget to feed them twice daily.

Quite interesting that these bearded dragons live up to 10 years out in the wild but can live up to 15 when kept in captivity or as pets, provided with proper care and meal. These dragons are called doggie-dragons or puppies of the reptile world because these speedy ones resemble the nature and behaviour of a dog and are equally friendly.  

How to know if a Bearded dragon is unwell? 

Lack of appetite, lethargy, loss of weight, abnormal feces, runny nose or mouth or swelling if noticed, that means it’s a warning sign.  A change in their behaviour from jovial to staying hidden and not wanting to bask indicates illness in them and if any of these signs shows up then it’s time to consult a vet.
